Bekasi Mayor Clarifies: Swimming Lessons in Schools Not Mandatory, Not a Determinant of Academic Grades
JENAWI | Bekasi - Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto emphasized that swimming lessons implemented in several schools are not mandatory and will not be used as a determinant of students’ academic grades. He delivered this statement while distributing free eyeglasses to 173 students of SMP Negeri 30 Bekasi, in collaboration with the Indonesian Optometrists Association (IROPIN), on Wednesday (September 24, 2025).
The mayor’s remarks addressed concerns among some parents who felt burdened by the requirement to participate in swimming lessons due to financial limitations or lack of access to facilities. Tri assured that sports activities, including swimming, should remain optional and flexible, adapting to the conditions of both schools and students.
“Swimming is not mandatory and is not used as an assessment requirement. It is merely an option offered by the school. There are many other sports that can serve as a medium for building character, health, and sportsmanship. We must not allow such activities to become a burden for parents,” Tri stressed.
He further explained that the main goal of physical education is not simply to pursue grades or short-term achievements, but to nurture healthy, resilient, and well-rounded individuals. The Bekasi City Government, he added, remains committed to providing inclusive sports facilities so that every child can explore their potential without unnecessary pressure.
“We want to produce homegrown athletes from Bekasi across various sports disciplines. But beyond that, we also aim to create space for children who excel in arts and culture. All of this is part of shaping an outstanding generation that makes their parents proud,” he said.
The mayor also highlighted the crucial role of family support in children’s development. According to him, preparing students for education requires more than just academics or sports—it must also include adequate nutrition, eye health, mental well-being, and strong character-building.
“Children must be prepared holistically. Not only academically or athletically, but also through proper nutrition, eye care, mental health, and character formation. All of these must go hand in hand,” Tri added.
This clarification reflects the direction of Bekasi City’s education policy—ensuring that programs remain adaptive to students’ and parents’ conditions while providing positive benefits without creating unnecessary financial or psychological burdens.
